Overview
Our intent in Art, Craft and Design is to develop our pupils to have a broad understanding, curiosity in and appreciation of the visual world through the creative process of making art, engaging with, analysing and reflecting upon their art work and examples from the past to contemporary artists, movements, photographers, craftspeople and designers working today. The curriculum develops pupils critical abilities and understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through studying a diverse range of male and female artists throughout history.
The creative process of Art, Craft and Design builds pupils resilience, confidence and self esteem, and develops skills that are transferable to support their learning in a number of different subjects.
Key Stage 1
Our intent in Art is to use a variety of teaching and learning styles in art and design lessons. Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, curiosity and motor skills. Projects are designed with the whole child's development in mind, looking at their motor skills, language and thinking alongside their creativity. Pupils are encouraged to explore a range of media and the possibilities they provide through a range of different themes, evaluating their own ideas and methods, and the work of others, expressing their own opinions and developing their visual vocabulary.
Art is taught in a cross curricular way through our 'Learning Means the World' curriculum.
Key Stage 2
Our intent at Key Stage 2 is to stimulate pupil’s creativity and imagination.
Art provides a visual experience and a different way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables pupils to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, line, texture, form, pattern and different materials, processes and techniques. They explore ideas and meanings through the work of various artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and function of art, they can explore the impact it has had on modern life and that of different times and cultures.
Key Stage 3
Students are offered a broad and balanced curriculum within a range of specialisms – painting, drawing, 3-D, ceramics and photography. Independent learning tasks through the allow students to develop their ability in managing their own interests through learning.
Throughout Key Stage 3, students are given opportunities to improve their skills in generating ideas through artist research, planning visual ideas through experimentation with materials and techniques in order to evaluate their own and others' work.
Key Stage 4
Our creative industries are a real success story. They are worth more than £36 billion a year; they generate £70,000 every minute for the UK economy; and they employ 1.5 million people in the UK. According to industry figures, the creative industries account for around £1 in every £10 of the UK’s exports. Opting to study GCSE Art and Design is the first stepping stone to work in this exciting and growing sector.
We follow the Eduqas GCSE Art and Design syllabus. We teach GCSE Art in ways that inspire and bring out the best in all students, whilst equipping them with the skills to continue the subject with confidence at A-level and beyond.
The flexibility of its design means we can tailor our course to your students’ interests and our department’s strengths. We teach to inspire, challenge and motivate every pupil, no matter what their level of ability,
Pupils critical understanding is developed through investigations of ideas and demonstrating understanding of sources. Creative making and refinement of work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes. Reflective recording developed through advancement of subject specific vocabulary and recording of observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses. Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language.
