Overview

At West Kirby School, we know that horticulture helps children acquire the essential skills they need to fulfil their potential in a rapidly-changing world and make a positive contribution to society as a whole. Horticulture allows students to become stronger, more active learners, capable of thinking independently and adapting their skills and knowledge to new challenges. Pupils gain a more resilient, confident and responsible approach and learn vital job skills such as presentation skills, communication and team work, and fuel their entrepreneurial spirit.

Key Stage 1, 2, and 3

In Key stages 1, 2 and 3 children get the opportunity to enjoy being outdoors. Teaching allows pupils to develop curiosity and pleasure from learning. The student’s get the satisfaction of watching something evolve from a tiny seed into a beautiful plant… or even vegetables they can go on to eat.

The students understand the importance of gardening and learn about contributes to the conservation of insects and biodiversity. In addition to environmental benefits, gardening has a big effect on student’s physical, emotional and social development

Key Stage 4

Horticulture offers students the opportunity to learn and demonstrate the skills and techniques in gardening. Pupils work towards the ASDAN short course in Gardening. This includes choices of:-

  • Planting in the garden
  • Growing food on an allotment.
  • Working undercover
  • Wildlife in the garden
  • Construction in the garden

Gardening promotes a healthier lifestyle exercise and can have a positive impact on your mental health and wellbeing. 

Horticulture provides opportunities to develop fine and gross motor skills. Also, developing new skills or hobbies can improve self-esteem and confidence. Being outdoors and doing something you enjoy can help with self-regulation.
